A Post from Jack

“My name’s Jack, I’m seven.  I am talking and mum is typing this blog post from me.  We went to the Desert Park.  It was in Alice Springs.  I really liked the Desert Park because it had lots of animals.  Some were endangered animals like: Bilby, Mala and Bettong Mouse.  We saw lots of birds.  We saw a Bird of Prey show and I really liked it.  We saw kangaroos, they were Red Kangaroos.  We heard an Aboriginal talk and we got to see the medicines they used.  We saw the Wedge Tailed Eagle and got to have a photo with him.  His name was Labelle.  He got his name from a cattle station up in Darwin.  We saw coconuts that were named bush coconuts.  They are a type of wasp’s home and they have a grub inside that tastes nice and the flesh on the inside tastes like coconut.  Man – I should have got a picture of a bush coconut!  I didn’t really mean to say that but mum just typed it in anyway.  I took some photos on my underwater camera that my grandparents gave me – it actually works out of the water  Do you think that’s enough for this post?? Mummmm!!!  I hope you enjoy my photos.”

We’ve hit the big time! (In Wynnum)

So, we discovered today that we have been featured this week in the ‘Wynnum Herald’ a Quest Community Newspaper.  I know we were between houses, neighbours, campers and cousins before we left – but we were pretty sure we lived in Samford!  Seems that if you have a sleepover at Wynnum (thanks Carla & Lachie!) you become an official resident – looking out for the rates notice in the mail!!  Unfortunately the paper seems to believe we are a Wynnum Family and have gotten a few details incorrect – gotta love the accuracy in the media today!!  We only discovered the article after noticing some hits on our blog coming from a link on the Wynnum Herald E-Newspaper site !  Hehehe – Carla and Lachie if you have a copy of the paper can you save the article for us for prosperity please???  Interesting to see that an article can be published about us without us even knowing anything about it or at least getting to have some say in the photos used to make sure we had brushed our hair or had clean clothes on (I do intend to email the paper and clear up some inaccuracies)!!  Anyway – thought we would share the article here for you all to get a bit of a giggle out of it!2013-07-05 09.44.15 pm

Happy 4th Birthday To Lexi

IMG_2592 img-130417160845-001I know, I know – 2 blog posts in 1 night is a bit much but Lexi turned four today, and I wanted to record the ocassion for posterity!  This birthday has been long awaited as ‘the day before our big trip starts’.

So, I know I am going to regret this when she uses it against us forever more, but it was not the greatest birthday event we’ve ever put together.  To start with, aaaargh – I’m so going to regret admitting this – we haven’t yet bought Lex a present.  Lucky for us friends and family had mailed some pressies down to us so she did have some goodies waiting on the camper table today for her when she woke up, but we just haven’t had time/figured out what we are getting her yet – terrible parents.  I also didn’t make her a cake.  Choosing a cake from the ‘Women’s Weekly’ cake book is a bit of a tradition for our kids, but I just couldn’t get there for Lex this year (but I did make cupcakes for her to take to Kindy on her last day on Wednesday so surely that counts for something?!?!).  We didn’t have a party for her – she asked all day ‘when are my friend’s coming over?’ – ouch!  And here’s the worst bit ………. I organised her 4yr old vaccination needles for today – yep – a needle in each arm for her birthday because I wanted them done before we hit the road.  We are never going to be able to live this birthday down!

Despite all this she still had a pretty good day I think!  She was spoilt rotten with gifts from friends at school and my wonderful workmates at BMR had even organised a cake and candles and a bag of Freddo Frogs for her when I dropped in today to get some paperwork signed – so grateful to the BMR crew!  We finished the day with a Pizza dinner and a Coles mudcake with the Hanstede family.

I’m going to finish below by inserting the email Matt sent out to the friends and family after Lex was born, just thought I’d include it here as a record for ever more – some of the ‘in-family’ speak won’t make a lot of sense to those of you who’ve never actually met us but you’ll get the gist!

“Yes it’s a girl!!!

The story:

Yesterday morning Jess told me she was having contractions and keep my phone nearby. This has been the norm for a while now so honestly, I didn’t think anything of it. But then last night about 10pm Jess reckoned things were getting serious. Again, I didnt think anything of it. Sooo i fell asleep…. Then Jess wakes me at  0130 and says ‘I think we need to go’, I, didnt think anything of it. I figured i’d call Kate B to come round just incase. (Actually thinking we might need to give Kate a couple of hours notice to, well, sober up, I mean it was Saturday night!) It rang out the first time so I figured I would have to post a comment on her Facebook to get her attention quicker, but we got ahold of her the second time. Soooo I went back to sleep. At 0400 Jess wakes me and says ‘I think we need to go…. NOW!’  This time there was some thing diferent in her voice, what would you call it….. hmmm…. Terror, yes, it was the subtle hint of terror in her voice that made me say, ‘oh alright, i’ll have a shower and we can go I guess’

So off we trot to the hospital, I was starving and wondered if it would be at all inappropriate to take a labouring wife to Hungry Jacks drive thru at 5am. Turns out it is. Who-da-thought? I don’t think the drive thru opperator will forget this day in a hurry!

So we walked into emergancy and the nurse took one look at Jess ‘walking’ towards her and grabed a wheelchair and an orderly and sent us far away from her. She had that ‘Hell no, I am not delivering a baby 20 mins from the end of my 12hr shift’  written all over her face! (Melissa, I am sure you know this face well!)

So the orderly, Pad Thai, got the job of wheeling Jess to level 5. The terror on his face was not quite as sublte as in Jess’s voice earlier.

On arrival at the lvl 5 baby factory, Karen Yates’ twin sister ushered us into suite number 1, which I thought was ironic, being that Jack was born in suite 3 and Lexi was to be born in suite 1.

Anyway, ‘our’ birth plan was simple. Eppi at the door thanks! Unfortunately, the public health system had other ideas because all the anesthetists were in theatre so Jess had to wait patiently. Now anyone who knows Jess, knows that patience it not one of her many strong qualities. Now imagine Jess, being patient, in the throws of labour…. yeah, and I still believe in the tooth fairy!

So I tried to slip Karen’s twin sister a ‘fiddy’ to get the eppi happening. Now even though Karen’s twin sister could take the AUD$50 back to ‘Un Zed’ and buy a new car or something, she didn’t seem interested. So I gave her what every New Zealander really needs, a copy of ‘The Dummies Guide to Rugby’ which I just so happened to have in my pocket.  This got things moving along and before we knew it the anethisitist ‘McSteamy’ was ready to go. It seems Lexi had other ideas though because while McSteamy was trying to paint picasso on Jess’s back with antisepyic wipe, Jess ‘quietly’ mentioned that she had to push. Karen’s twin sister didn’t believe her and told her keep sucking the gas, Jess then even more ‘quietly’ mentione that she just pushed, Karen’s twin sister decided she had better have a look and low and behold there was Lexi sayin’ hello. One more push and she was out! Now, for all the women scanning this email for the details.Lexi in the pink corner has tipped the scales at 3.215 kg (7pound 1oz in yesteryear speak) Meaning she is officially the fattest of them all, and based on her instant attachment to the feed bags, she will probably maintain this title for a while. She was 49cm long (19 1/2 inches) with a head circumference to match the other girls in the house.

So both the ‘gals’ are doing really well, Jess has once again totally amazed me, and Karen’s twin sister as it turned out.

Now sorry about the photos, I have left the good camera at hospital so these are just from my phone. Better ones to come.
Well off to the shot gun shop for me I guess……

Farewell to Matt from Skroo Turner – Flight Centre Limited

Farewell to Matt from Skroo Turner – Flight Centre Limited

We have had a really great weekend, successfully moving out of our house, a lovely farewell lunch today with great friends and family and the first of some tough ‘goodbyes’.  I have lots to share about the last week but am just too tired tonight.

Instead – I wanted to share a blog post from Skroo Turner with a farewell to Matt from Flight Centre – it has definitely been a journey at FCL over the last 10 years – some lows but lots of highs too!!  We are grateful for the opportunities Flight Centre has given our family and Matt’s time there will certainly not be forgotten!

The ‘Worry’ List

IMG_2677At this point in our trip preparations I am flipping between being totally excited about heading off and the places we will see, the time we will have to spend all together and the adventure of it all, or like today – totally freaking out about what on earth we have gotten ourselves in for!!

I know I am a stressor and an over thinker.  I know we are heading off on the 1st of June no matter what and that our reasons for doing our trip are important to us.  But I’m worried and just a bit scared and nervous. Not helped by the fact that today the kids were little terrors – misbehaving, fighting and making so much mess!

So here’s my ‘worry list’.  I’m concerned ……………………………………

  1. About how on earth we are going to get our 1 acre block, 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 5 person house all packed up and cleaned in time.
  2. That we will be so freezing cold and miserable for the first few months of our trip as we are heading off in the middle of winter.  I’m worried our sleeping bags won’t be warm enough and nor will our clothes!
  3. About our kids thinking that life is just one big holiday and not knowing the value of hard work!  I’m sure with all the camping/travelling we have done with them it seems like all we do is go on holidays!
  4. I feel a bit guilty, that maybe we don’t deserve this trip.  Some people work their whole lives before they get to go off on an adventure like ours.
  5. I’m worried that after 8 years of shift work and crossing paths like ships in the night most of the time, that Matt and I won’t know how to spend so much time together anymore!
  6. About the kids fighting ALL of the time and driving us all nuts!
  7. That we haven’t had enough experience with 4-wheel driving or travelling in remote areas.  I’m not sure what we are in for!  We really wish we had of joined a four wheel drive club a year ago.
  8. That by probably getting to the Kimberley in August we have left it to late and won’t get to see the true beauty of that area.
  9. I’m worried about leaving behind all the great friends and community we have here in Brisbane and not finding anything like that again!  It has taken us this long to finally start feeling like we belong!
  10. About the kids schooling and that we won’t do enough with them while we are travelling and they will get too far behind and have to repeat a year.
  11. I love routine and organising.  I’m not sure I will like not having that.
  12. That something major will break down on the trip or on our house that we are renting which will throw our whole budget for the trip out!
  13. About our little car not selling and having to offload it for whatever we can get, therefore significantly reducing our fuel budget for the trip.
  14. That we are not going to fit everything in the 20ft container we have ordered to store our house.
  15. I’m worried that our dog is losing his marbles and is going to be a burden on those who look after him for us.

And there are so many more little silly things but those are the main ones!  What on earth are we thinking doing this trip?!?!

I’m taking myself off to bed, I am sure it will all seem better in the morning and hopefully in a few months I can laugh at all these worries.

Nothing Great is Easy, Nothing Great is Easy, Nothing Great is Easy …………………………………..

Light Bulb Moment

Ben Avon Station, Far North QLD

Ben Avon Station, Far North QLD

We are too excited to sleep tonight!  Today presented us with an epiphany!  You will remember that we wrote on our ‘Why are We Doing This’ post that part of wanting to do our trip was to have some time out to rethink our life and try to find a way to make a difference in this world, to give back, to do something useful.  Well, we think we may have come upon an idea to kick start that!.

My Mum sent us this email today;

On 02/05/2013, at 2:34 PM, Mum wrote:

been thinking ’bout your trip and what it means – and trying to extend the parameters so the kids ( no, all of you really ) get the most out of it
… so maybe you adopt a cause, sport a few stickers, talk a bit – it should not be a task, or a job – haven’t really crystallised my thoughts, but I’m putting it out there to let you think about it too

your blog is an awesome tool …

And my response;

On 02/05/2013, at 2:36 PM, Jessica Fealy wrote:

mum – that is sooooooo awesome!  Matt and I talked about this – similar thing – a couple of months ago and couldn’t think of anything to lock on to/that we were passionate enough about – really love it – great idea – hmmmm – I am going to think some more too ………….

And so that is where we are at (big thank you Mum)!  Matt and I are both from farming backgrounds in Far North Queensland – I grew up on a dairy farm and Matt’s family own a cattle station and potato, corn and peanut farm up there.  The future of Australian Farmers is something very close to our hearts, something we are very passionate about.

The Dairy Farm where I grew up.

The Dairy Farm where I grew up.

We love the idea of being able to educate our kids (and ourselves) as we travel around Australia, about the broader community we are all a part of, and the responsibility that we all have to ensure the country we live in is an amazing place.  We are excited about the thought of promoting Australian Farmers and Rural Australia and maybe helping more people understand why they are such an important part of our country. We want to try to make a difference, no matter how small it may be.

Can we do this? How do we do this?  And how do we balance this with our other objectives for the trip, to slow down, take some time out, no pressures – we don’t want to fill it all up with another purpose???  Can we just start small and see how it goes?

I know lots of our friends and family have already been thinking along these lines and have made changes to the food they buy and consume, so what do you all think?  All ideas and feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

School Holiday Fun

Mudjimba Beach for the afternoon with Aunty Kate

Mudjimba Beach for the afternoon with Aunty Kate

Well, with the school holidays all but finished, I thought I would share what we have been up to for the last two weeks.  It was a very quiet Easter for us this year, definitely not the fun of our last Easter’s at Emu Park, but Matt was short staffed at work this year and we decided that he may as well do as much work as he could over the long weekend and top up the piggy bank for the trip.  So it was just our little family for Easter – we headed to Aunty Kate’s on the Sunshine Coast on Good Friday and got to have an afternoon at the beach and a morning at the pool.  We had a very quick Easter Sunday breakfast when Matt got home from work in the morning, before he went to bed and headed back to work in the afternoon.  We were also lucky enough to go next door and join in with the Seaborn’s Easter Egg hunt in the paddock and Easter Brunch which was lots of fun.

Other than that we have just been spending time with the cousins and kids’ friends and enjoying having them sleepover!  We headed to the local creek and also out to Sandgate which is about a 30 minute drive from our place and is the closest beach to us.  I have taken the kids bike riding there before and there is a great playground too, oh and plenty of places to fish!

We also took a day trip out to visit the Daisy Hill Koala Centre http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/wildlife/daisyhill-centre/.  This is a free Koala education centre located in the Daisy Hill Conservation Park http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/daisy-hill/index.html  and the kids had lots of fun – they saw Koala’s and Wallabies, there were some good interactive exhibits, a viewing platform to climb, a little movie theatre and lots of space in the picnic area to run around in.  Definitely worth checking out if you live in Brisbane.

Why Are We Doing This?

When we tell people that we are heading off around Australia, travelling with 3 kids aged 7 and under, with a camper trailer to live in which is probably smaller than the size of your average bedroom, for the next 6 or 7 months – many people think we are totally bonkers!!

I know that perhaps it does seem crazy to jam a family together in such a confined environment for over 6 months, and maybe financially irresponsible to put the mortgage on hold, a step backwards to sell many of the possessions we have spent so many years accumulating, and perhaps even detrimental to the kids schooling ……… the list goes on.

We are very lucky that our family and friends have been very supportive, positive and genuinely excited for us. However, we do still get a few – ‘you’re nuts!’ or ‘I’d rather chew my own arm off” comments and these make us think – eeeeeek – are we doing the right thing??? Are we crazy????

The answer for us is always YES, we are NUTS, but we feel 100% this trip is the best thing we can do with our lives right now and here’s why;

1. To Celebrate our Success
In my younger days I was a swimmer and at one point, our little country swimming club ended up with a very loud, diet-coke drinking, American swimming coach called Dave. I learnt a lot about working hard, goal setting and dreaming big during his time with us. Something else he tried to impress on us (big shout out to any Malanda Aquatic Dragons reading this!) was the importance of celebrating your success. He believed that if you won a race or swam a PB (personal best, for the non-swimmers out there) then you must celebrate – with a big fist pump or huge yell or even just a big grin & jump. Now – for a pretty shy, small town ‘aussie’ farm girl – this sort of behaviour didn’t come naturally. It seemed very ‘American’, very boastful and loud. It didn’t feel right and unfortunately I never went on to be an Olympic swimmer. However, I now believe that Dave was right. It is important and OK to ‘celebrate your sucess’. You’ve got to do something to make your self feel good, amazing even, after all the hard work …… otherwise, why on earth go back for more/to do it all again????

So, this trip for us is a big ‘fist pump’. It is a chance to celebrate the hard work Matt has done to get to the point of 10 years long service leave, to shout out ‘we survived!’ the sleep deprived baby years of raising three kids, to ‘jump & grin’ about the home we have managed to create and the life we have built that is pretty darn good so far! This trip is the reward and the motivation to start out on the next chapter of our lives – and it feels great!!

2. Time to ‘Smell the Roses’
We believe that sometimes it is important to stop, slow down, and ‘smell the roses’ a little. We feel like the last decade for us has passed mostly in a blur of shift work for Matt, buying and shfting houses, part-time work for me with a ‘hi/bye’ at 2pm as we swapped over work/house manager roles, sooooo many nappies and school pick ups and drop offs. We want to use this trip to spend time together as a family – cementing our bond, sealing in our family values, instilling a love of this beautiful land we live in and generally ‘loving’ each other!

3. Simplifying Life
Our current life has been too busy, we have accumulated too many ‘things’ and our kids have no idea that you can actually wash dishes without a dishwasher! We want to change all that on this trip. We want to make life simple and re-programme some better habits for our life. On the trip we will only have 4 sets of clothes each and the kids will only be bringing some Lego and colouring books with them. There will be no TV. Our aim will be to eat healthy, fresh, yummy, basic meals (coke and chocolate addiction be gone!), exercise every day, read lots, sleep lots, see lots, sing lots, draw lots, write lots, talk lots, laugh, and probably, fight and cry lots. Idealistic maybe, but it’s worth a shot!

4. Time out to Plan the next step in our Lives.
I’m an eldest child. I’m a Virgo. I am an accountant. And Matt & my sister’s will tell you – I’m a bit ok, a lot Bossy.

It is well known that I like to Plan, Set Goals and Make Lists – end of story. (yes, yes, family – I know it can be very annoying, but stuff gets done ok – so quit the ‘eye rolling’!!).

So – Matt and I have been married 10 years this year, it is time to set the new 10 year plan. We have been fortunate that the last one was pretty straightforward.

Establish careers – tick

Buy a house – tick

Travel lots – tick – just missed the living/working overseas thing due to the step below arriving a little ahead of schedule!

Have lots of kids – getting there – tick.

Be Happy/Live life to the full – mostly, tick.

This next 10 year plan though, is much harder ………..

We’re not sure where we now want to live and raise our family, we’re not sure our careers are really the ones we want, we want to do more with our lives, to make a mark on the world – something GOOD, useful, fulfilling and challenging that will carry us far into our futures, but we have no idea how or what that should be!

We’re hoping this trip will give us the time out to clear the mind and allow room for the mud map for the next 10 years to come to life ………….. we’re open to suggestions!?!?

5. Making the Most of Our Life
Pretty self explanatory – we want to live life to the full and to show our kids that they can do that too!! We want to get to the end of our life journey and know we filled it in to the brim with love, family, adventure, and that we gave everything we wanted to do, and even some that we didn’t, a ‘red hot go’. Travelling around Australia with our 3 young kids in a camper van is definitely one of those ‘must do’ things for us.

So, in the words of Mary Oliver ………….

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”

Mary Oliver, New and Selected Poems
