Kirrama Range Road, Blencoe Falls, Murray Falls

Following on from our Goshen Station camping post, I thought I’d better hurry up and finish that trip off with a little post about the beautiful Blencoe Falls and the Kirrama Range Road – remembering that I am still playing catchup and we did this trip in July 2016!

As we camped at Goshen Station for a week, we decided to take a day trip out to Blencoe Falls from there. It was only a short 40 minute drive to the falls and a fantastic day out. We took a picnic lunch, did a walk, checked out the camp grounds and had a swim. It is a beautiful spot at Blencoe Falls but quite crowded when we were there (it was school holidays). The waterfall lookout and viewing platform boasts spectacular views – definitely deserves the title of being one of the most stunning (and least known) waterfalls in Australia! There are views of the waterfall and the Herbert River Gorge – there are lots of Hoop Pines and it felt like we were in Canada somewhere!

Lexi and I did the short (took us about an hour) walk from the viewing platform to the campgrounds. It was an easy walk with some beautiful scenery along the way. Here’s a few photos:

The campgrounds are National Park, so you must book online here and there are no amenities. There were some really beautiful spots right on the river. Campfires are allowed, there are a stack of different walks, you can fish, but there are signs saying crocodiles so I am not to sure about swimming – people were and we had a paddle as we had heard that you were safe to swim above the falls – just not below them.

We took the Mt Garnet, Gunnawarra Road in to Goshen Station and Blencoe Falls, so when we packed up camp we headed out via the Kirrama Range Road to the coast, for something different. It was a beautiful drive. It is doable in a two wheel drive but four wheel drive is recommended as it is pretty washed out/rough in places. The lookout is amazing and there is a picnic area towards the bottom called ‘Society Flat’. There is a short rainforest boardwalk here through the gums and pines, but no facilities. The road was very well maintained when we went through.

At the bottom of the range we headed in to Cardwell for a fish and chip lunch – yum after a week away camping! From there we headed to Murray Falls, thinking we might spend a night camping there. It was a beautiful spot, but raining and lots of mozzies so we opted against camping and just went for a wander around instead.
